GWE 2026 Legwork: The Destroyer (#3)

The Destroyer v Horst Hoffmann (All Japan, 12/17/85)

Horst Hoffmann is another guy I should watch every match of. There's only about a dozen of them and I've probably watched half by now so it wouldn't be the tallest of tasks. These two are awesome together and I imagine 30 minutes between them would take a lot of the good stuff here - well it was all good stuff - and ramp it up. The matwork was always going to have a nice mix of grit and beauty and watching them work around a headlock and headscissors for a few minutes was a treat. They escalated that nicely as well and I like how Destroyer would go for the figure-4 only to get clubbed in the face. They made it clear that Hoffmann wanted nothing to do with that hold and every time he struck his way free of it he followed up with a knee between the shoulder blades or across the chest. When Destroyer grabbed Hoffmann's standing leg Hoffmann did a one-handed cartwheel out of it, which Destroyer took a second to register and as he did so Hoffmann yanked him into another hold. They ran through some WHIMSICAL Euro stuff with the seesaw pin and built to a cool rope-running sequence where Destroyer got to remind us that he's ath-o-lete with his nifty kip up.  Destroyer pretty much behaved himself the whole time so things never quite got surly, but they did start trading some forearms and uppercuts towards the end and that's another thing you can add to the list of stuff Destroyer did remarkably well.
