Mantopoulos! Roger Delaporte! The 1960s French Catch!

Roger Delaporte v Vasilios Mantopoulos (French Catch, 3/23/68)

It's been a while since I've visited my favourite pro wrestling Vasilios. Delaporte I haven't actually seen before, but enough people have told me to watch him that this pairing excited me. There was a fairly significant size difference in favour of Delaporte, who sort of worked as a bully at points but also a bit of a craven shithead, which is really one of the best combinations you can get. Delaporte reminded me of Dick Murdoch here, the way he moved, his body shape, his trunks, his hair, his sneaky athleticism despite not looking like much of an athlete. The biggest similarity was how he would crack Mantopoulos in the jaw. Mantopoulos is a wizard and would draw Delaporte in with TRICKERY, but Delaporte is far from a simple weasel and has ample skill of his own. Then when the skill didn't work he'd get to the cheating, sometimes by grabbing Mantopoulos by the throat and choking him. At times he'd just thump a downed Mantopoulos in the spine with brutal kicks, like something out of a WAR undercard. There was some amusing stuff with the referee here, who was dressed like he'd just come from officiating the Snooker World Championships. There was a great moment where Delaporte backed the ref' into the corner with his derrière, then kept him there long enough for Mantopoulos to charge in with a dropkick. Delaporte moved at the last second and the ref' got toasted, which resulted in Mantopoulos getting himself a warning. Delaporte then pointed to his head because he's that much smarter than everyone else. By the end the ref' had wound up both men and Mantopoulos gave the fella a diving headbutt to the gut three times in a row, none of them accidental. I will endeavour to watch more Delaporte. I will endeavour to watch ALL of the Mantopoulos.
